MYBA In Town Recreational Basketball Program

The MYBA In Town basketball program aims to provide a competitive and engaging experience for girls and boys of all grades. We feel strongly that this program provides a great environment for learning the game of basketball, competing against your friends, and more importantly, having tons of fun! This program runs for approximately eight weeks, weather permitting, beginning in early December.

1st and 2nd Grades
Players are divided by gender and grade. They play on a 9’ rim with junior-sized (27.5”) basketballs. The 60-minute “skills and drills”-focused program runs on Saturday mornings/early afternoon at both Jordan Jackson and Robinson Elementary gyms. 1st grade girls play at 9:00 a.m., 1st grade boys play at 10:00 a.m., 2nd grade girls play at 11:00 a.m., and 2nd grade boys play at 12:00 p.m. Coaches are entirely volunteer-based, and the teams are divided by the selected coaches in advance of the first weekend. Players all receive a junior-sized rubber basketball, as well as an MYBA jersey.

3rd through 8th Grades
Players are divided by gender and grade, although depending on the enrollment numbers, some grades may be combined at the MYBA In Town Coordinators’ discretion. Coaches are volunteer-based, and teams are divided by the In Town Coordinator, often in consultation with coaches and/or individuals familiar with the players. Teams will have one practice during the week and one game on the weekend. Younger grades use either a 27.5” or 28.5” basketball and play on a 9’ rim, whereas older grades play on a standard 10’ rim and use a 28.5” or 29.5” basketball. The MYBA only provides game balls to coaches; all players receive a numbered jersey.

High School Program
This is the MYBA’s most popular program, and we often get upwards of ~150 players, forming ~15 teams. There are no practices, and games are played on the weekend (usually Sunday evenings). The MYBA provides 29.5” game balls and referees, in addition to team uniforms with local sponsors displayed on the back. Coaches are often former high school stand out players or recently graduated former players. Games are very high paced, fun to play and watch, and culminate with a formal playoff tournament.
